About James
Meet James Gillot, a dynamic force in the world of photography and filmmaking. With an insatiable appetite for creativity and a knack for capturing the essence of any environment, James thrives on the diversity of his work and the myriad of personalities he encounters.
As the visionary behind James Gillot Media, Jurassic Melbourne, and Moon Honey, James Gillot has carved out a niche in the realm of media production. Specializing in event coverage, James brings a unique blend of creativity and technical expertise to every project. His run-and-gun style emphasizes movement, figure, and emotion, setting him apart as an event coverage specialist and director.
James's journey into photography and filmmaking began in 2004 when his mother introduced him to the art. Together, they captured events and marketing content in the education and corporate sectors. In 2010, James made the pivotal decision to pursue a career in photographing the music industry and launched Jurassic Melbourne. This led to multiple national tours and collaborations with some of the country's biggest dance music festivals.
By 2015, James expanded his repertoire to include video production, founding Jurassic Melbourne with a goal to capture the biggest events in the country and advance the state of the art within the niche. Renowned for his stunning imagery and conceptual avant-garde video productions, James is well-recognized within the community. "Music festivals are extremely challenging environments to work in but also give you so much creative freedom. With every project, I always try to do something I’ve never tried before, ideally something that no one in the space has tried before."
This ethos eventually led to the incorporation of multicam and live streaming into his skill set. Success in this niche paved the way for opportunities to direct and shoot music videos, ad campaigns, concept films, artist portraits, and conference coverage.
Some highlights include:
Light Balance: A collaboration with Tetrik and Hera Wing, finalist in the Melbourne Fashion Film Awards.
Ngurra Kurlu: Shot in the remote northern desert near Lajamanu, this project is a visual accompaniment to an album created by music producer Monkey Marc and Warlpirri Elders, Steven Patrick and Jerry Jungala Patrick. The project invites the broader Australian public to embrace indigenous heritage into our shared cultural identity.
Yarra Ranges: In collaboration with Jeremy Angerson from Small Revolutions, James produced a series of videos for Yarra Ranges council, including a seasonal campaign to encourage local spending and the launch of a new BMX track.
